The name King William is one which many in Ulster hold dear to their hearts; an admiration which is completely justified. William is regarded by many to be the greatest human benefactor ever known to Ulster Protestants. He broke the power of the Roman Catholic tyrant, James and preserved and reinstated civil and religious liberty for us. "Liberty" is central to Biblical Protestantism, and it has long been the aspiration of Ulster Protestants. We owe King William a great debt of gratitude; he gave much for the sake of our liberty. Having left his family in Holland he risked his life in coming to these islands, in the Battle of the Boyne he was very seriously wounded and nearly killed. William had a history of ill health, but despite this he was undaunted and fearless: he maintained the fight, and won victory for himself and Ulster's Protestants. Surely this admiration of William is reflected in the endurance of "the twelfth" celebrations; Ulster's Protestants still value the stand of William.
William's self-sacrifice for our benefit reminds us of the greatest Conqueror and Sovereign, the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Saviour left the splendour of Heaven to come to a world that was cursed by the sins of man. Although He is King, He took the "form of a servant" and "was made in the likeness of men." (Phil 2:7). This King then went to Jerusalem and died upon a Roman cross for sinners. By His death we can know freedom from the dominion and tyranny of Satan and from the doom of sin. The penalty of our sin is spiritual death in Hell (Romans 6:23), but the Lord Jesus Christ, who never sinned, was made sin so we might be delivered from Hell. (2 Cor 5:21). Isaiah the prophet said, "He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)
Sadly, in Ulster so many who celebrate the victory of King William have failed to see the true message of Protestantism and the Word of God; Christ is the only way of salvation. Many today venerate King William yet they have despised and rejected the greatest King of all. The claims of God are much greater than William's: Jesus said, "Ye must be born again." (John 3:7). The price of man's freedom is paid, therefore, the Saviour says to you, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matt 11:28)
